24 05 13 The Exquisite Hour Poster 500

Vernon Powerhouse - The Exquisite Hour by Stewart Lemoine
7:30PM Monday, May 13, 2024

The Exquisite Hour, written by Edmonton playwright Stewart Lemoine, is a sweet ode to bygone days when the world's knowledge seemed to be contained in encyclopedias and peddled by a door-to-door salesman.

Or in this case, saleswoman. Helen Darimont is a chirpy, charming, be-gloved lady in 1962, interrupting pleasant bachelor Zachary Teale late in the afternoon as he sips lemonade in his backyard, to politely ask him for an hour of his time.

Over that hour, shy Zack is pulled out of his shell by Helen as they act out scenarios from one encyclopedia volume, and he becomes the open book she reads. They charm and connect—with each other and with the audience—before the play ends, exquisitely, 60 minutes from when it began.

Anthony and Rosemary are two introverted misfits straddling 40. Anthony has spent his entire life on a cattle farm in rural Ireland, a state of affairs that due to his painful shyness suits him well. Rosemary lives right next door, determined to have him, watching the years slip away. With Anthony’s father threatening to disinherit him and a land feud simmering between their families, Rosemary has every reason to fear romantic catastrophe. But then, in this very Irish story with a surprising depth of poetic passion, these yearning, eccentric souls fight their way towards solid ground and some kind of happiness. Their journey is heartbreaking, funny as hell, and ultimately deeply moving. OUTSIDE MULLINGAR is a compassionate, delightful work about how it’s never too late to take a chance on love.
